If your water heater is busted or you just want a better one you have more options than just replacing your current tank heater. Because heating water is consuming about 10-15 percent of the average family’s energy budget all the new water heaters are extremely energy efficient at heating water.

Normal Tank Water Heaters

Tank water heaters are the large, usually white, ugly looking things that can hold 50 – 300 litres of water depending on the required amount. These tank heaters can be electric or gas powered. If you really do want one of these conventional water heaters you must make the decision of whether you go gas or electric. If you can get a gas connection then it is always suggested you purchase a gas water heater as they cost less to run and are a lot more energy efficient. When buying your water heater you should check the energy star rating to see how it compares with other water heaters.

Tankless Water Heaters

A tankless water heater, also known as an instant hot water system, does not rely on any storage system as it passes the water through heated coils that provide on the fly hot water. A tankless water heater may be able to provide unlimited heated water it is limited by volume. The average instant water heating system can provide 5-7 litres per minute which is plenty for most households but if you require more than this you will need a bigger system or a different type of water heating unit.

You can purchase natural gas, propane, and electric tankless water heaters. If you are interested in purchasing a mains natural gas tankless system you better check your supply before hand just to make sure it can handle the load of the water system when it’s being used at maximum capacity. You can purchase indoor and outdoor gas heaters. If a gas water heater is installed inside it requires venting so it is advised to install them outside as the cheaper and less fussy option.
